Student Skincare- Get a Summer Glow, Naturally
If you’re anything like me, you will have spent the last few years reading fashion magazines and brochures which are aimed a slightly older women. They give career advice, fashion advice and relationship advice tailored towards women who have graduated college, or who are now married or moving on to greater things in their lives. As much as I am an avid reader of women’s magazines (I think I may have a minor addiction!), I find the skin care advice incredibly confusing. At 20, I don’t really feel I need to read about the best wrinkle shrinking creams or tips on how to rejuvenate sagging facial skin.
However, I read an article the other week which suggested that we should start using anti-aging products from the age of 21. Yes, twenty-one! I’m not sure where the logic comes from to make this claim, but it scared me a little. My mother has really good skin, but wrinkles show around her eyes, especially when she’s tired. Now, every time I have a bad night’s sleep I panic that wrinkles are invading my face and frantically apply creams and lotions to solve this. Frankly, having written this down on paper, I’ve realised how silly it is. We are young and have all the time in the world in the future to worry about wrinkles! But, just to be on the safe side, I’ve compiled a quick list of some of my favourite and best recommended skin products and brands which will take care of our skin in the present (while adding a nice glow!), ensuring that we will have lovely skin for as long as possible (and THEN we can panic about wrinkle cream!)
Saffron Rouge: A great company which produce a huge range of organic cosmetics, skin care and hair products. Their online shop allows you to find products based on your type of skin, what product you are looking for or starter kits. Personally, I’d recommend the ‘raw coconut creme’ and Suki ‘Exfoliate foaming cleanser’ – they really make your skin soft and dewy. There is also a service where you can order two free samples of new products every time you place an order (and we know all students love free things!)
Alba Botanica: I was lucky enough to be sent some samples by this great company, and I can highly recommend the ‘Hawaiian cleanser’, which left my skin (combination/oily) smooth and oil free! They have a large range of skin products, including anti-aging products and sea weed night cream! For me, Alba is definitely the more affordable option with products usually being around the $12 mark, although there are a lot of products cheaper than that.
Lavera : Although I have never used Lavera myself, I’ve heard some great reviews. Once more, this is a company with a huge range of eco products (aren’t we spoiled?!), which range in price from the highly affordable $5 face masks, to the more expensive $99 anti-aging kit. What attracts me to Lavera is that they do environmentally friendly sun cream and self-tan products, which usually drown you in chemicals and are certainly not natural!
Once you have your products, I recommend spending ten minutes or so every night removing your make up with a foaming facial cleanser or wash, followed by wiping your face in small circles with a toner suited to your skin type. Then, don’t forget to moisturise with either a general moisturiser or a night cream. I also find that exfoliating my skin every other day in the shower is great for removing dull skin and also helps my skin stay less oily. If you are worried about a certain skin issue (dry skin, uneven tone, blotchiness) have a look around for the products which are recommended for your particular need, I guarantee there will be something out there for you! And let’s all remember, no matter how tired we are, or how many cocktails we’ve had – invest in some good quality facewipes and remember to take your make up off before bed!
Why not try some of these products out, and let me know if you have any recommendations via @bexceptional_, @fashionmegreen or leaving a comment!
