Eco-Outfit: Summertime Stripes

Nina Garcia wrote in her book The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own: "The striped sailor shirt is one of those items that embodies French chic." She also insists that every woman should own at least one. I couldn't agree more. What I love about stripes is something Nina identifies- their ability to keep an outfit cool and casual while still adding an element of style. Totally French chic.

So when Amour Vert and I decided to partner on some eco outfit posts (more to come!) a classic striped tee was a given. What I am loving about this shirt in particular is how easy and flattering the fit is. It feels like a modern take on an old classic. And Amour Vert knows French chic. As a San Francisco based brand with #madeinUSA and #sustaiblefabrics credentials, plus a French creative director (Linda Balti) at the helm, their pieces have become basic pillars in many a fashionista's closet. You can stock up on these French girl must-haves too! Amour Vert is offering FMG readers a 20% discount when you use the code GREENLOVE. Merci Beaucoup!

Eco-Outfit: How to Wear a Bodysuit

Oh how I love a good bodysuit! So sexy without trying too hard. For of-the-moment styling, pair with high waisted jeans or jean cut-offs. The high waist helps with proportions, while the denim material keeps the overall feel more casual. If you did want to dress up a bodysuit, pair with wide or straight leg silk or satin trousers and a high heel.

I was so thrilled to partner with Reve En Vert for this outfit because they have the high fashion (eco) goods! Namely the bodysuit and trench I have been lusting after. ;) I paired them together with my California girl staples- jean cut-offs and slip on sneaks for a high- low look.

Eco-Outfit: Sea Foam & LemLem

Summer felt like a slow start to me this year and then all of a sudden (with a heat wave no less!) it was on. When I think summer and about which eco brands I want to shop, LemLem is top of mind. My friends at Reve En Vert carry the line and had this super cute dress available to help me usher in summer with style. (BTW- REV is having a 60% off sale right now, so check it out to stock your closet with some awesome eco pieces!)

If you are unfamiliar with LemLem, let me fill you in. It was started by model Liya Kebede in 2007. The aim of LemLem is to share beautiful craftsmanship with the world while employing skilled workers in Ethiopia. Everything is handwoven and made with natural cotton fibers. You've probably seen a LemLem piece or two poolside at a tropical resort, and now with the more fashion pieces like a jumpsuit and romper, you'll likely recognize the brand around LA's hot spots.

LemLem is definitely a summer go-to in my book. What about you? What brands are you loving for summer style?

How to Shop for a Safe and Effective Sunscreen

All sunscreens are not created equal. In case you didn't know, there are two types of sunscreen- chemical and physical. Check out my short video to learn more and be sure to scroll down to see the safe and effective sunscreens I do recommend.

Chemical sunscreens are pretty much a super toxic cocktail of ingredients (including PABA and oxybenzone) that can at best irritate skin and at worst disrupt your hormones. Sure, they rub in nicely and don't leave any white residue, but the fact that they sink into your skin and then literally absorb the sun's UVA and UVB rays leaves me feeling uneasy.

So, as you can probably tell by now, I am a fan of physical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens are mineral based and use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to create a layer that sits on your skin and blocks harmful rays. I will admit, some leave you look pretty pasty, but we've come a long way and there are better formulas out there that do the job without making you look like Snow White. Here are a few of my favorites:

Eco-Outfit: London's Reve en Vert Style in Malibu

I first met the Reve en Vert (REV) girls around 2010- which feels like a lifetime ago. Long before they started REV, we were all connected by this desire to be fashionable yet ethical in our wardrobe choices. With luxury fashion backgrounds, we hit it off right away. When they launched REV as a fashion-forward and ethically-focused boutique I was overjoyed! And over time, they have kept their promise on both fronts- delivering some of the best (mostly European) labels with eco cred.

So, when they approached me to style some of their pieces into my eco-outfit looks, I felt like I'd won the lottery! Based in London, REV definitely has a more European style aesthetic, but that is something I am very comfortable with (having lived in London for two years). In fact, most of my wardrobe is well suited for Europe, and it has been a challenge to adjust to the laid back Cali style. Luckily, I feel I hit a nice, wearable balance with this look. Initially I was concerned I would be way overdressed for Malibu, but on a date night this look is perfect and fit right in. I do think the skirt being a knit helped soften the look, while the booties made it a little more cool and less 'done' than if I had worn heels.

I also recently learned about  a local LA-based brand called Colour Pop which produces some amazing hues for lipgloss, nail polish and eye shadow. My favorite part is their commitment to being vegan and cruelty-free. The color I wore for this shoot is called 'Sting Raye' and it stayed on all day! Loved the matte finish too.
